Causes of Chronic Pelvic Pain
Chronic pelvic pain can arise from various sources, including:
- Reproductive system conditions: Disorders like endometriosis or ovarian cysts often cause ongoing pelvic discomfort, particularly in women, with pain fluctuating during menstrual cycles.
- Digestive system issues: Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or chronic constipation can lead to referred pain in the pelvic region.
- Urinary system disorders: Issues like interstitial cystitis may result in persistent pelvic aching or discomfort.
- Musculoskeletal problems: Tension in pelvic floor muscles, joint dysfunction, or past injuries can contribute to chronic pain, often localized or radiating.
- Hormonal imbalances: Fluctuations in hormones can intensify pain, especially when tied to reproductive health.
- Stress and tension: Emotional stress or chronic muscle tension can amplify pelvic pain, perpetuating a cycle of discomfort.

Mike is a licensed and board certified acupuncturist as well as a board certified herbalist. He is a fertility specialist at The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness in the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan, New York.
My wife and I wanted to start a family. We tried, and we failed repeatedly. I was not an acupuncturist then and had no understanding or belief in it. That did not hold much weight with my wife. We both underwent testing and found out that I had poor morphology and poor motility, and she had anti-sperm antibodies. Nancy saw an acupuncturist and herbalist, who also convinced me to go for treatment. Three months later, Nancy was pregnant. We now have a twenty-nine-year-old, healthy, happy, and successful son. This is when I became a believer. I decided to go to acupuncture school. I went for four years for acupuncture studies and then two more years to study herbal medicine. I knew from the first day at school that I wanted to specialize in treating others who were suffering from the terrible and challenging battle of infertility. I have spent the last twenty-seven years making my dream come true by helping my patient’s dreams come true. I am so grateful for the path I chose. A life dedicated to helping others has shown me a satisfaction I would have never known. I am thankful to my wife, and I am grateful to my patients.
This experience led Mike to obtain his degree in acupuncture from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine’s New York campus and his National Board Certification in herbal medicine. Equipped with the necessary license and fueled by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Mike studied Western medical approaches and the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine about infertility treatment. Through rigorous study and invaluable clinical experience, he developed unique acupuncture protocols and proprietary herbal formulas, tailoring them to each individual or couple seeking his assistance.
How Acupuncture Helps

Acupuncture, a cornerstone of the center’s practice, involves placing fine instruments at specific points on the body to restore balance and stimulate healing. For chronic pelvic pain, acupuncture provides relief by:
- Enhancing circulation: Improved blood flow to the pelvic region reduces tension and supports tissue health, alleviating discomfort.
- Modulating the nervous system: Acupuncture calms overactive pain signals, reducing the intensity of chronic pain.
- Balancing hormones: By stabilizing hormonal levels, acupuncture addresses pain linked to reproductive or menstrual conditions.
- Relieving muscle tension: Targeting tight pelvic floor muscles or surrounding areas, acupuncture promotes relaxation, easing musculoskeletal pain.
Patients at The Berkley Center often experience noticeable pain reduction after a series of acupuncture sessions, with many achieving long-term relief. The center’s personalized approach ensures treatments are customized to each individual’s condition, targeting both symptoms and root causes. Testimonials highlight the transformative impact, with one patient noting that after being unable to walk due to severe pain, they experienced near-complete relief after a single session, crediting Berkley with “giving their life back.”
The Role of Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine, another key offering at The Berkley Center, complements acupuncture by providing plant-based remedies tailored to each patient’s needs. These customized formulas, available as teas, capsules, or tinctures, support the body’s healing processes by:
- Reducing inflammation: Herbal remedies soothe irritated tissues, easing pain from chronic conditions.
- Supporting organ health: Formulas strengthen the reproductive, digestive, or urinary systems, addressing dysfunctions that contribute to pain.
- Regulating hormones: Herbal blends stabilize hormonal imbalances, reducing pain tied to menstrual or reproductive health.
- Promoting relaxation: Certain remedies calm the nervous system, alleviating stress-related tension that exacerbates pelvic pain.
By combining herbal medicine with acupuncture, The Berkley Center enhances the body’s ability to heal, often leading to faster and more sustained pain relief. Mike Berkley’s expertise as a board-certified herbalist ensures that each formula is carefully designed to target the patient’s specific symptoms and imbalances, a practice refined over decades of clinical experience.
