Acupuncture offers a gentle, evidence-informed approach to addressing common fertility challenges. It can be used alone or alongside conventional treatments such as IVF or IUI. Customized herbal medicine is available as an optional addition if you are interested in this form of support—we never require or obligate patients to take herbs.
Research from American and European studies shows that acupuncture can help improve egg quality, endometrial lining quality, and sperm quality. Once pregnancy is confirmed, we recommend twice-weekly acupuncture treatments for the first 13 weeks to help support the pregnancy and reduce the risk of miscarriage associated with hypoxia.
Poor egg quality—often linked to age, diminished ovarian reserve, or oxidative stress—can lower fertilization rates and embryo viability. Acupuncture helps by:
A thin or poorly receptive uterine lining can hinder implantation. Acupuncture promotes:
Meta-analyses confirm that acupuncture significantly improves endometrial thickness and receptivity parameters, particularly with appropriate dosing across cycles.
Male-factor issues—including low motility, concentration, or abnormal morphology—respond well to acupuncture.
What is sperm DNA fragmentation?
Sperm DNA fragmentation refers to breaks or damage in the genetic material (DNA) inside sperm cells. High levels are linked to reduced fertilization rates, poorer embryo development, increased risk of miscarriage, and lower success rates with both natural conception and assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF or ICSI—even when other semen parameters appear normal.
Acupuncture and, when chosen, customized herbal medicine have been shown to improve overall sperm parameters (motility, concentration, and morphology) while also helping to reduce sperm DNA fragmentation. This occurs in part by decreasing oxidative stress in the reproductive system, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity, and supporting the body’s natural defenses against cellular damage.
Once pregnancy is confirmed, we recommend twice-weekly acupuncture treatments for the first 13 weeks. This protocol helps stabilize the pregnancy and specifically addresses miscarriage risk linked to hypoxia.
Hypoxia is a condition in which tissues—such as the developing placenta or embryo—do not receive adequate oxygen. In early pregnancy, it often results from insufficient blood flow to the uterus or emerging placenta. Without enough oxygen and nutrients, embryonic development can be impaired, raising the chance of miscarriage.
Acupuncture promotes better blood circulation to the uterus and placenta by relaxing blood vessels and reducing over-activity of the sympathetic nervous system (which can constrict vessels). This improved microcirculation delivers more oxygen and nutrients during the critical first trimester when the placenta is forming. Studies show acupuncture enhances uterine artery blood flow and helps reduce symptoms of threatened miscarriage.

Mike is a licensed and board certified acupuncturist as well as a board certified herbalist. He is a fertility specialist at The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness in the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan, New York.
My wife and I wanted to start a family. We tried, and we failed repeatedly. I was not an acupuncturist then and had no understanding or belief in it. That did not hold much weight with my wife. We both underwent testing and found out that I had poor morphology and poor motility, and she had anti-sperm antibodies. Nancy saw an acupuncturist and herbalist, who also convinced me to go for treatment. Three months later, Nancy was pregnant. We now have a twenty-nine-year-old, healthy, happy, and successful son. This is when I became a believer. I decided to go to acupuncture school. I went for four years for acupuncture studies and then two more years to study herbal medicine. I knew from the first day at school that I wanted to specialize in treating others who were suffering from the terrible and challenging battle of infertility. I have spent the last twenty-seven years making my dream come true by helping my patient’s dreams come true. I am so grateful for the path I chose. A life dedicated to helping others has shown me a satisfaction I would have never known. I am thankful to my wife, and I am grateful to my patients.
This experience led Mike to obtain his degree in acupuncture from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine’s New York campus and his National Board Certification in herbal medicine. Equipped with the necessary license and fueled by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Mike studied Western medical approaches and the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine about infertility treatment. Through rigorous study and invaluable clinical experience, he developed unique acupuncture protocols and proprietary herbal formulas, tailoring them to each individual or couple seeking his assistance.

After childbirth, many new mothers experience a range of physical and emotional symptoms collectively known as postpartum conditions. Common signs include fatigue, sleep deprivation, mood swings, anxiety, depression (often referred to as baby blues or postpartum depression), and physical discomfort such as back pain and hormonal imbalances. These symptoms can vary in intensity and duration, impacting a mother’s overall well-being and her ability to care for her newborn.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine can provide significant relief for postpartum symptoms. Acupuncture helps by promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and balancing hormones, which can alleviate mood swings and anxiety. It also improves blood flow and energy levels, helping to combat fatigue and physical discomfort. Herbal medicine, customized to each individual’s needs, can support hormonal balance, boost energy, and improve sleep quality. Together, these treatments offer a holistic approach to recovery, helping new mothers regain their strength and emotional stability during the postpartum period.
Our ‘Get Well’ Program includes 10 acupuncture visits and your own customized herbal medicine formula.
