Low-Level Light Therapy Q & A

What is low-level light therapy (LLLT)?

LLLT, also known as red light therapy or photobiomodulation, is a treatment that promotes improved and increased mitochondria (powerhouses of the sperm and egg cells).  The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness offers LLLT to patients to enhance the quality of egg and lining.

Unlike some light therapy treatments, LLLT uses low levels that don’t include ultraviolet (UV) rays, eliminating the risk of skin damage that could lead to cancers.

Because the light energy is kept at a low level, the effects are biochemical (similar to how plants respond to photosynthesis) instead of thermal, so there’s no overheating or damage to the treatment area. Instead, you have a growth factor response within the cells with a strengthened and improved egg quality.

Fertility clinics worldwide have reported improved outcomes for patients who combine LLLT with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) approaches like in vitro fertilization.

What are the benefits of LLLT?

This treatment improves your fertility by increasing blood flow to target areas, reducing oxidative damage, and enhancing your mitochondrial activity and ATP production. Taken together, these benefits boost your reproductive health and improve your chances of achieving and remaining pregnant.

Am I a good candidate for LLLT treatment?

If you suffer from seizures or epilepsy, are taking cortisone or steroid injections, or take any photosensitive drugs, you should explore other treatment options. LLLT treatments are ideal for women between 35-47 years of age who have:

  • Poor egg quality
  • Multiple implantation failures or miscarriage
  • Thin endometrium

The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness typically schedules three treatments per week and continues three times per week until pregnancy is achieved.
