Low Level Laser Therapy for Egg Quality Improvement

Traditionally, reproductive medicine has often maintained that ageing and declining egg quality is irreversible. Yet research into the effectiveness of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation for fertility, shows that it is possible to improve egg quality, slow down the ageing process and significantly improve fertility in women and men.

In fact, several fertility clinics in North America, Europe (most notably in Denmark and Norway) and in other countries around the world, report consistently high percentages of successful fertilization in patients when combining Laser Therapy with Assisted Reproductive Therapy (ART).

Furthermore, laboratory studies have repeatedly shown the effectiveness of Low Level Laser Therapy for fertility due to enhanced mitochondrial activity and ATP production, increased blood flow and the reduction of oxidative damage.

At The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness, we follow the work of our associates closely and align with best practice protocols that are found to be most effective.

We work with each individual patient to optimize their health as required, using the standard LLLT protocols for fertility in conjunction with many other protocols for maximizing the efficiency of the body. These mechanisms and protocols are designed to help rejuvenate eggs and sperm mobility, maximize egg quality potential and prepare the body for fertilization and pregnancy.

What does Low Level Laser do?

Low Level Laser through photobiomodulation, is proven to be effective for many health conditions because it enhances mitochondrial production and ATP production.

An average cell contains around 2,000 mitochondria, whereas the oocyte (the human egg cell) has 600,000 mitochondria. Application of Low Level Laser increases the production of cellular energy (ATP) in the mitochondria, which in turn improves the cell’s ability to proliferate, migrate and adhere which is exactly what a fertilized egg needs to do.

Low Level Laser (LLLT) also improves the body’s functionality overall in the following ways:

  • Increases blood flow.
  • Reduces inflammation and oxidative damage.
  • Softens scar tissue and releases it through the body’s natural waste system.
  • Relives pain.
  • Relaxes muscle tension.
  • Promotes tissue repair.

These factors are beneficial to the reproductive environment, particularly in the case of softening scar tissue, which can be a contributor to fertility issues.

We also advise patients to maintain a healthy diet, sleep, exercise and rest in order to support their mental and emotional health throughout their healing journey. All these factors combined help patients reach their peak fertility potential.

Who can receive treatment

Younger women do not respond as well to photobiomodulation Therapy for fertility, as egg quality is not normally an issue for younger women.

The optimum age for promoting fertilization via cold laser treatment is for women in the mature age group of 35-50, because reproductive cells are more likely to lack cellular energy from the ageing process.

LLLT is recommended to improve the following conditions:

  • Low ovarian reserve
  • Poor egg quality
  • Multiple implantation failures
  • Miscarriage
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Endometriosis
  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)

Men with a low sperm count will also benefit from photobiomodulation.
